Crates were large wooden boxes found all over the known universe, which contained a variety of items. They were made in Crate Factories.

The most common crates simply contained bolts. Red explosive crates detonated in a violent eruption after a countdown or when destroyed. Metal crates were only be opened with an explosion from an explosive crate or an explosive weapon, or alternatively by the Walloper. Ammo crates contained ammunition for weapons. Nanotech crates contained globes of Nanotech that would heal the player. Less common crates included the Inferno crates, which equipped the user with Infernox armor and a more powerful Wrench for a limited time; Jackpot crates that multiplied the total number of bolts received for a limited time; Massive crates, which provided Ratchet with a combination of bolts, ammo and nanotech; and Vac-U crates that were only found on planet Magnus which needed at least two people using Vac-Us to open them.

In Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, certain crates also contained RYNO IV Holo-Plans, they looked exactly like the normal ones, and in Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault all the basic crates in a level must be broken to obtain the Crate Hater skill point for the level.
