The Magneboots are a gadget in Ratchet & Clank, the 2016 re-imagined game and Rift Apart. In Rift Apart they allow Ratchet and Rivet to traverse specific magnetic surfaces called Magne-Strips, such as on ventilation shafts and undersides of spacecraft, though they grant them limited movement while doing so.

In most other releases though Ratchet instead made use of the Gravity Boots with similar functionality while still granting Ratchet full movement on surfaces.

Obtaining the Magneboots in the high-definition re-release of the original Ratchet & Clank (standalone and in the Ratchet & Clank Collection) grants the player the Lombax Magnetic bronze trophy.

The design for the Magneboots in the 2016 re-imagined game heavily resemble the Hoverboots from Into the Nexus.

History[]

Ratchet & Clank[]

The Magneboots were still under development by Gadgetron. Clank found a prototype pair[1] while exploring the surface of Orxon in "Search the laboratories", where the boots were among many things left behind, and brought them back to Ratchet. Ratchet initially thought Clank was unwilling to give him the boots, at which point Clank explained they were stuck to him due to them being magnetic.[2]

The two needed the gadget to gain entry into the walled city at Fort Krontos, Batalia, for the mission "Explore the walled city", as ordered by the Commando.[3] They were also used extensively at the Kogor Refinery on Orxon, while trying to catch an infobot. Later, Ratchet also used the boots while traversing a long Magne-Strip through the Gorda City Ruins on Oltanis during the mission "Purchase Gadgetron PDA from 'Steve'". They were also used for short moments on the Gemlik Base, Drek's fleet, and planet Veldin.

The 2016 re-imagined game is primarily an unreliable retelling of events by Qwark.
The re-imagined game primarily describes Captain Qwark's account of events. As Qwark is an unreliable narrator, and contradictory events are in-universe fiction (though those which correspond still apply). Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.

In the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank, Clank instead finds the boots while exploring outside the Blarg Tactical Research Station on his own in "Journey outside the airlock".

Rift Apart[]

Both Ratchet and Rivet had a pair of Magneboots, which they used to hop between specific magnetic surfaces.

Gameplay[]

The Magneboots are required for Ratchet to explore many areas of the worlds visited, as well as to gain access from secrets.

In the original Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet's movement while using the Magneboots is limited. As all of the weapons and gadgets Ratchet uses are made from magnetic metal, only the OmniWrench can be used while using the Magneboots. Additionally, it is not possible to jump (using X will just cause Ratchet to attempt to and fail to jump), and movement is slow and restrictive, being at half the usual speed.

In both the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank and Rift Apart, when using the Magneboots, Ratchet has full movement on surfaces he is walking on, similar to the Gravity Boots. In Rift Apart, Ratchet and Rivet can also use the Magneboots to perform a leap between Mag Surfaces; these are prominent on Blizar Prime in particular.
