The Swamp Monster I was a the first boss on planet Oozla in the game who was responsible for the deaths of many of the Megacorp staff in the proximity. Ratchet could fight the monster as part of the main storyline. Ratchet first encountered it on planet Oozla while it was preying on a Megacorp employee. It sank down, ate the employee, and Ratchet fought the monster to gain access to the Megacorp Outlet. The Swamp Monster tried to harm the lombax by slapping its tentacles down over him. Swamp Monster I was actually believed to be Swamp Monster II, only revealing the eye stalk and tentacles. Swamp Monster II was fought in a cavern that can be accessed from the Megacorp Outlet after obtaining the Gravity Boots.
It was recommended that you used the Lancer to shoot the Swamp Monster I. If you didn't have any more ammo, you should had used the Chopper, which could stun the beast temporarily at wherever it hit.
