Valkyries were a type of robot, generally seen as all female due to the banishment of their males. The valkyries were trained to be both powerful on the ground and in the air. They specialized in piloting ships, with their three leaders being Carina, Cassiopeia and Libra. Their main base was the Valkyrie Citadel, on planet Vapedia. They chose to work for Dr. Nefarious to gain their original colony back.

History[]

The Erebus supernova was a huge supernova that destroyed the original Valkyrie colony decades ago in the Polaris Galaxy.[a] However, some Valkyries managed to survive and took residence on planet Vapedia. The females of the race banished the males for failing to ask for directions during the move following the loss of their home. When volcanic explosions ravaged Vapedia, the Valkyries lifted habitable portions into the sky, creating the Valkyrie Citadel. When the volcanoes stopped erupting, they left the citadel there for defensive reasons.

During the events of A Crack in Time, Dr. Nefarious agreed to help the Valkyries by using the Great Clock to prevent this if they helped him reach it. The Valkyries soon agreed and kept Clank hostage for Nefarious, but the three Valkyrie leaders ended up being destroyed by Ratchet. Having failed, Nefarious no longer helped the Valkyries.

Characteristics[]

Following the banishment of their males, valkyries would kill any men of their species with their death course. The leader Cassiopeia stated "Any man is too weak to survive this course" as Ratchet began the first round. The female of the species have gigantic rears. Cassiopeia, Carina and Libra are larger than the rest of the Valkyries with Cassiopeia appearing to be bigger than the rest of her species.

They were even more dangerous than the space pirates, claiming more than double ship hijackings in one year than the space pirates.

Combat[]

Two types of valkyrie were encountered on Vapedia, the first type wielded oversized hammers. These hammers had a jet engine at one end of the hammer, making the hammer slam much stronger then normal. Hammer valkyries attacked by two means, each requiring a different response. They might slam their hammer right down on Ratchet, causing a fair amount of damage if it makes contact. They; however, need to be close to perform this attack. Another, more dangerous move they might make is spin their hammer, which causes them to spin rapidly toward Ratchet, requiring a quick response. Backflipping away from the spinning valkyrie is an excellent way to escape the hammer. After the valkyrie is finished swinging, it will be exhausted, leaving it vulnerable to a counterattack. While they are entirely melee enemies, and their movement is highly humorous, be wary they never travel alone and their movement should be careful scrutinized if on low health.

The second type wielded a javelin, and most flew using a jetpack. Their javelins weren't a stick, but rather an explosive rocket capable of being thrown as a great distant. They are highly accurate enemies, and the player must be ready to dodge an incoming javelin. If Ratchet ran up to them, they would normally run away until they were at safe distance, and then throw their explosive javelin. However, they could, on occasion, stab Ratchet with their javelin before running away. While a few fought on the ground, most were equipped with wing-jetpacks, being able to bombard Ratchet from the safety of the air. A good way to destroy them was while dealing with them, trying to de-wing the valkyrie over a cliff, which would kill them instantly. If they landed on the ground, they would attack on foot.

Notes[]

  1. According to Galactic Trivia, the Erebus supernova was the largest supernova in Polaris history. It is heavily implied, but not explicitly stated, that the Erebus Supernova was the resulting explosion from the tear in space-time created by the fongoids' collective misuse of time travel, as said result destroyed eighty-three celestial bodies and, given the fongoids' homeworld of Torren IV, most likely occurred within the Polaris Galaxy. This is further backed up by a late-game Space Radio news report, with reporter Kip Darling stating that the "time-space catastrophe" occurring across Polaris had been "unseen since the Erebus supernova of late".
